A Taste for the Infinite
Schleiermacher, Process Theology,
and the Sublime
Seven Devotional Questions
For Schleiermacher, religion in its most basic form was a ‘sense and taste for the Infinite.’ It was the intuition that God existed. And, if God existed, the dependence we should place on such an infinite Being naturally followed. For him, religion was not the doctrines or dogmas that spur debates and controversies. It was not the prejudices and preconceived notions that are used to justify endless war. And it was certainly not the judgments and condemnations that lead to generational fear and hurt. Religion was the experience of an intimate relationship with the Divine.
