Beauty and the Beautiful
Note from Jay McDaniel: This essay reflects my own ideas, developed and refined with the assistance of AI as a collaborative writing tool. AI helped shape and organize the language, and some ideas surfaced through its suggestions, guided by my prompts. Some of the language is mine, polished by AI; some is AI’s, edited by me. The interpretations, arguments, and conclusions, however, are entirely my own.
Beauty is the harmony of contrasts felt in the depths of experience — the shape of its subjective form. Its strength is nourished by variety, arising partly from the world that is given and partly from the subject’s power to weave that world into patterns of enjoyment, turning bare multiplicity into living unity. Beauty is not an abstraction but a felt intensity, a life experienced from within. The beautiful, by contrast, belongs to the world as offered to us: the content of things as they afford the possibility of beauty.
Below you will find two passages from Adventures of Ideas where Whitehead unfolds this vision of Beauty and the Beautiful. It is here that he introduces and explains the idea of "strength of beauty" and links it not only with the a felt harmony in experience, but also with the idea of intensity in experience. The passages are followed by a suggestion that, in human life, we experience at least five kinds of beauty: natural beauty, artistic beauty, soul beauty, moral beauty, and tragic beauty. These forms of beauty animate our lives in many ways; and they provide 'meaning' in life. They are forms of what Whitehead calls satisfaction, Whitehead links the experience of peace, which he calls the crown of the soul, with tragic beauty. It includes suffering and weaves it into wider contrasts. It is true that finite creatures can and do enjoy Beauty. And it is also true that humans and other creatures participate in Beauty as a transcendent ideal. It is the telos of the universe and the aim of God for the world. The peace of which Whitehead speaks is itself God, understood as a Harmony of Harmonies in which the universe unfolds. In this sense, God is the ultimate Beauty.
