Four Modes of Time
Measured Time
Measured time is the time of clocks, calendars, and coordinated activity. It is public, standardized, and quantitative, allowing societies to organize work, travel, communication, and shared expectations. Its strength lies in precision and comparability: an hour is the same for everyone. Yet this very uniformity abstracts from lived experience. Measured time does not register boredom or joy, urgency or stillness; it provides a framework within which life unfolds but does not capture how that life is actually felt.
Lived Time
Lived time is time as experienced from within. It stretches, contracts, fragments, or deepens depending on attention, emotion, memory, and anticipation. In lived time we remember, expect, decide, and feel the present as more than an instant—as a thickened field of becoming. It includes fast and slow time, moments of flow and boredom, urgency and waiting, continuity and fragmentation. It also takes rhythmic and situational forms: the differing energies of daytime and nighttime, the patterned repetition of daily routines, the symbolic unfolding of dream time, and the charged intensity of kairos—the sense that “now is the moment.” Importantly, lived time can also be experienced as open-ended: the future felt as genuinely undetermined, alive with possibility, responsive to present action. In conversation, music, work, or rest, time may feel rich and expansive or thin and empty. Lived time is thus qualitative and textured, shaped by how we attend, feel, and participate in the world.
Everlasting Time: A Creative Advance into Novelty
Everlasting time is the ongoing succession of events without absolute beginning or end. It is time understood as continuous becoming: each moment arising out of what precedes it and contributing to what follows. In this sense, nothing is simply lost; what happens is taken up into the unfolding of the whole.
Phenomenologically, everlasting time is not experienced as an actual infinity stretching before us, but as an intuition: that after every partly envisionable end, something still comes after that. We can imagine conclusions—a life completed, a civilization ending, even a cosmic collapse—but each imagined ending carries with it the sense that it is not truly final, that some further becoming follows.
Eternal Time
Eternal time is not a form of duration but a timeless dimension of reality. It is not “more time,” but a different order altogether—a presence that does not pass away. It can be understood as the realm of pure potentiality or as a depth of presence sometimes intuited in moments of stillness, insight, or unity.

Varieties of Lived Time
Within ordinary time, there are important variations in tempo and texture. From a first-person perspective, these varieties are not rigid categories but points along a continuum, shaped by attention, expectation, memory, and context.
Fast and Slow Time
Time may feel compressed and urgent, especially in situations of novelty, stimulation, or demand, where events unfold quickly and leave little space for reflection. At other times, it becomes spacious and immersive—particularly in sustained attention, conversation, music, nature, or craft—allowing perception and meaning to deepen.
Fragmented and Continuous Time
Time can be broken into discontinuous moments through distraction, multitasking, and interruption, especially in digital environments. By contrast, it can also be experienced as a coherent flow, where experience unfolds with a sense of continuity and integration.
Anticipatory and Retrospective Time
Lived time stretches forward in expectation and backward in memory. Waiting for what is to come can elongate the present, filling it with excitement or anxiety, while recollection reshapes the past, expanding or condensing it according to its emotional significance.
Rhythmic Time: Daytime and Nighttime
Time also unfolds in recurring patterns shaped by the rhythms of the earth and the body. Daytime is often associated with activity, outward engagement, and productivity, while nighttime carries different tonalities—rest, intimacy, reflection, and altered states of awareness. These alternating rhythms give time a cyclical, qualitative texture rather than a purely linear form.
Absorbed (“Flow”) Time
In moments of deep engagement, self-consciousness recedes and time seems to disappear or pass unnoticed. Attention is fully given to the activity itself, and distinctions such as fast and slow lose their relevance.
Opportune (Kairotic) Time and Open-Ended Time
At certain moments, time is felt as charged with significance—a sense that “now is the moment.” This opportune quality reflects a heightened awareness of decision, action, or insight. Closely related is the experience of time as open-ended, in which the future is felt as genuinely undetermined and responsive to present choices—a field of real possibility.

Within measured time, loss appears as simple succession: something that was present is now past. A moment ends, a life ends, a relationship changes, and the clock moves on. The emphasis falls on irreversibility—what has happened cannot be undone. Measured time registers loss as a fact: a before and an after, a “no longer.” It can therefore make loss feel stark, even impersonal, as if what is gone has simply disappeared into the past.
Lived Time — Loss as Felt Absence and Grief
Within lived time, loss is experienced from within—as absence, longing, grief, and sometimes shock. The past does not simply vanish; it lingers in memory, in habits of expectation, in the body itself. One still “reaches” for what is no longer there. Time may slow, thicken, or fragment under the weight of loss, taking on the qualities of tragic time. Moments can feel heavy, saturated with what has been lost, even as life continues. Here loss is not an abstraction but an affective reality.

Every joy and every sorrow is held within a divine life that remembers, cherishes, and weaves all things into an ongoing harmony. Loss remains real, but it is not final.
And a still further step, for some within the process tradition, is the hope that the soul itself continues its journey beyond bodily death. On this view, personal existence is not exhausted by a single lifetime but participates in the larger, unending adventure of becoming. What has been lived is not only remembered by God but may also be carried forward in new forms of experience. This possibility remains a matter of hope rather than certainty, yet it expresses a deep trust that the story of each life is not cut short by death but continues in ways we cannot yet fully envision.

It does not come into being and does not perish.
However, if temporal means happening—an event, an actuality, something that is alive rather than abstract—then the eternal can be understood as temporal in a different sense. It is not a static object or frozen state, but a non-temporal aliveness, something that is encountered. It is not extended in time, but it is not inert. It is, in this sense, a kind of non-successive event.
From a Whiteheadian perspective, this becomes clearer through the distinction between eternal objects and the primordial nature of God. Eternal objects are pure potentialities—forms of definiteness such as colors, shapes, and emotions—that do not exist in time but can be realized in temporal events. They do not happen in succession; they are available. The primordial nature of God is the ordering of these eternal objects into a realm of relevant possibilities, a living valuation of what might be. This primordial reality is not temporal in the sense of succession, but it is not inert; it is an active ordering, a lure toward realization.
In this light, the eternal is not part of the temporal flow, but it is present to each moment of that flow as a depth of possibility and meaning. Each actual occasion draws upon eternal objects as it becomes, guided by the primordial nature of God as a source of potential forms and aims. The eternal is thus not “another time,” nor is it sheer abstraction; it is a dimension of reality operative within every moment of becoming.
To say that the eternal is non-temporal in the sense of succession prevents us from imagining it as an infinitely long duration. To say that it is temporal in the sense of happening prevents us from imagining it as lifeless or detached. It is better understood as a living reservoir of possibility, continuously relevant to the unfolding of the world, and disclosed in moments when the depth of reality is felt within the present.

From a Whiteheadian perspective, this occurs through the ingression of eternal objects into actual occasions. Eternal objects are timeless potentialities—forms, patterns, values, and qualities—that do not exist in time but can be realized within it. When a moment of experience takes on a particular definiteness—a color, a harmony, a feeling of beauty, a moral intensity—it is actualizing possibilities that are more than the moment itself. These possibilities are not created by the moment; they are drawn into it. They are ingressed.
Phenomenologically, this can be felt in many ways. A piece of music may seem to embody a beauty that transcends any single performance. A moment of love may feel as if it participates in something larger than the individuals involved. A work of art, a mathematical insight, or a gesture of compassion can carry a sense of depth that is not exhausted by its immediate occurrence. In such moments, the finite becomes transparent to something more—something that does not pass away even as the moment itself does.
This does not mean that the eternal exists apart from the world as a separate realm occasionally visited. Rather, it means that the eternal is present in the world as the reservoir of possibilities that each moment can actualize. The primordial nature of God orders these possibilities, offering them as relevant to each situation, while the actual occasion selectively realizes them in its own unique way. The result is that every finite event is, in some measure, an embodiment of the eternal.

The Flow of Time: A Becoming of Continuity
“There is a becoming of continuity, but no continuity of becoming. The actual occasions are the creatures which become, and they constitute a continuously extensive world. In other words, extensiveness becomes, but ‘becoming’ is not itself extensive. Thus the ultimate metaphysical truth is atomism. The creatures are atomic… Each atom is a system of all things.”

As we look at the physical world around us, we encounter something like an extensive continuum: a spread-out field of space divisible into regions. It is tempting to think of time in similarly spatialized terms—as a continuum divisible into moments. The same holds for lived or subjective time. It seems to “flow” like a river in a kind of continuity which we may analyze into moments, but whose essence appears continuous.
Whitehead acknowledges the truth in these perspectives, but adds a crucial qualification: the continuities at issue—both objective and subjective—are not given in advance. They are created by experience itself. They do not precede becoming; they arise from it.
More precisely, they are created by non-temporal acts of experience—acts of concrescence—which are not themselves extended in time. In each such act, the many of the universe are gathered into a unity through feeling or prehension; the many become one, and are increased by one. Each moment is thus a self-contained act of synthesis, not a stretch of duration.
All of this is to say that, at the deepest level, time is not a continuous flow but a succession of momentary acts of experience. These moments—what Whitehead calls actual occasions—are the fundamental units of reality. Each is a unified act of becoming: it arises, integrates what has come before, and then perishes. They are atomic, not in the sense of being material particles, but in the sense of being indivisible acts. They are not stretched out over time and cannot be broken into smaller temporal phases.
And yet, these atomic moments are not isolated. Each one includes, in its own way, the entire past. Through what Whitehead calls prehension, every occasion takes account of prior occasions—some directly, some indirectly—and weaves them into its own becoming. In this sense, each moment is both atomic and relational: a single act that is also a synthesis of the many.
Crucially, each occasion is a moment of subjective immediacy—a lived, inward experience of non-temporal becoming—which then perishes. The immediacy itself does not endure. However, aspects of that occasion—its achieved form, its influence, its way of integrating the past—are taken up into subsequent occasions. In this way, what is lived is preserved in its effects. This is how continuity emerges: not through the persistence of subjects, but through the transmission of their energies through the feelings of their successors.
From this perspective, continuity is not given in advance. It is achieved. The world is continuous because each moment inherits from its predecessors and contributes to its successors. There is, as Whitehead says, a becoming of continuity—but the things that become are discontinuous. There is a becoming of continuity, but no continuity of becoming.
In this way, the flow of time is not a pre-existing container within which events occur. It is the ongoing achievement of events themselves—each moment a fresh synthesis of what has been, and a new contribution to what will be. Time does not precede actuality, actuality creates time.
