Whitehead's Practice of 
Assemblage as a Civic Virtue

Assemblage is the gathering of insights, experiences, and perspectives from a variety of sources—science, art, religion, literature, personal life, politics—without subsuming them into a fixed or totalizing system. It is a process of holding together difference and complexity in creative tension, allowing new meaning to emerge without forcing premature synthesis. It is an act of intellectual hospitality.

"Philosophy can exclude nothing. Thus it should never start from systematization. Its primary stage can be termed assemblage. Such a process is, of course, unending. All that can be achieved is the emphasis on a few large-scale notions, together with attention to the variety of other ideas which arise in the display of those chosen for primary emphasis. Systematic philosophy is a subject of study for specialists. On the other hand, the philosophic process of assemblage should have received some attention from every educated mind, in its escape from its own specialism."

​Philosophy "can exclude nothing"

Whitehead argues that philosophy must be radically inclusive—it should not pre-judge or exclude any dimension of experience, thought, or inquiry. It must remain open to the multiplicity of what is real, imagined, felt, or speculated.

No starting with systematization

Philosophy must not begin with the intent to build a rigid system. Rather, it should begin with a process of assemblage—gathering insights, experiences, intuitions, and categories from all areas of life and thought.

Assemblage as primary

The early or “primary” stage of philosophy is the work of assemblage: a kind of creative gathering or curating of ideas, perspectives, and experiences. This resonates with Whitehead’s broader metaphysical emphasis on becoming and creativity.

The process is unending

There is no final philosophical system that can capture the totality of truth. Philosophy is a perpetual process, not a destination. Its value lies in the ongoing effort to think more deeply and broadly.

Selective emphasis and variety

While it is inevitable to focus on a few “large-scale notions” (like creativity, value, or process in Whitehead’s own system), it is also crucial to stay attentive to the diverse ideas that emerge when those core notions are explored.

Systematic philosophy is for specialists

System-building, with its precision and formal rigor, belongs more to academic specialists. But the broader spirit of philosophy—the work of assemblage—belongs to everyone, or at least should be part of the education of every thoughtful person.

Escape from specialism

Whitehead urges all educated individuals to engage in philosophy as assemblage in order to break free from the narrowness of specialization. This is a call to integrative thinking—philosophy as a way to reclaim wholeness in a fragmented intellectual culture.

There is something about Whitehead’s mind that draws people in—even those who feel ambivalent about his metaphysical “system.” What captivates is not always the structure of his thought, but its spirit: a bold, generous assembling of insights from a wide range of sources—science, art, religion, mathematics, literature, and lived experience. In Modes of Thought, Whitehead makes this process explicit, treating assemblage itself as essential to philosophical reflection.

Indeed, there are many philosophers in the contemporary milieu for whom assemblage is a revered practice: Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, who define assemblages as dynamic, heterogeneous groupings of forces and flows; Gloria Anzaldúa, whose mestiza consciousness embraces hybridity, contradiction, and the weaving of multiple identities; and William James, whose radical empiricism honors the patchwork nature of lived experience and the open-ended search for meaning.

True, Whitehead was also deeply interested in systematic thinking—his metaphysical works attest to that—but as the quote from Modes of Thought makes clear, he saw system-building as a later stage in philosophical reflection. What comes first is assemblage: the gathering of insights, intuitions, and experiences from many domains, held together not by forced synthesis but by creative responsiveness to the evolving complexity of reality. Philosophy, in this light, is not merely the construction of a final system but the art of assembling a worldview that remains open to surprise, contradiction, and the lure of deeper understanding. It is, at its best, a form of intellectual hospitality—a willingness to receive insights from across disciplines, traditions, and lived experiences without the need to resolve them into a single doctrine. Such generosity reflects not indecision, but a disciplined openness to complexity and a generous trust that meaning need not be imposed but can emerge through attentive gathering.

There is a civic virtue here. In our time I find that thinkers on the left are not particularly hospitable to thinkers on the right, and vice versa. They are siloed, I wonder if they might step back and consider the possibility that, prior to defending their respective ideologies, they might commit themselves to intellectual hospitality and to the practice that Whitehead calls assemblage.

In an age that increasingly values intellectual diversity within the modern university, Whitehead’s approach has a special role to play. Assemblage affirms the importance of gathering insights from across the spectrum of human inquiry—not only from different disciplines but also from divergent political and philosophical perspectives. It calls for a generosity of mind, where ideas are engaged not simply to be defeated or absorbed, but to be understood in their complexity. This is not a call for relativism or neutrality, but for a more spacious kind of thought—one that resists immediate closure and seeks instead the creative possibilities that can emerge from tension, contrast, and conversation. In this spirit, assemblage becomes more than a philosophical method; it becomes a civic virtue, and perhaps even a path toward healing the fractured intellectual and moral landscape of our time.

The practice of intellectual hospitality—the art of assemblage—does not come easily. It must begin not in higher education, but at home and in early childhood. And it must not be preached; it must be modeled. Children learn to assemble not by being told to “value different perspectives,” but by watching adults engage one another with curiosity, humility, and respect. They learn from moments when disagreement does not lead to dismissal, when questions are welcomed rather than silenced, and when complexity is embraced rather than feared. The seeds of assemblage are sown in households where books, stories, meals, and conversations become occasions for gathering—not only of facts, but of meanings and emotions. If nurtured early, this sensibility can grow into a mature capacity for living with diversity—of thought, of feeling, of culture, of belief. In this way, Whitehead’s vision of assemblage becomes more than a method of thought. It becomes a moral and relational way of being—one that must be cultivated patiently, generationally, and with the kind of care that philosophy, at its best, makes possible.

We might even imagine faith traditions as encouraging assemblage—not by insisting on rigid dogma, but by offering stories, symbols, and practices that invite reflection, relationship, and layered meaning. At their best, religious communities become places where people gather fragments of wisdom—scripture, ritual, silence, suffering, joy—and assemble them into a lived theology, responsive to the world’s needs. The sacred is not always found in settled answers, but in the ongoing weaving together of memory and hope, mystery and insight, ancient tradition and present struggle. In this light, assemblage becomes a spiritual practice: a way of honoring the complexity of life, resisting the temptation to simplify the divine, and staying open to the many ways the sacred might speak. A faith that assembles is one that listens across difference, welcomes the stranger, and trusts that truth may arise not in uniformity, but in the depth and diversity of shared experience.
