The song "Sukiyaki," in its Japanese version, is a song of lament over existing social conditions and hope for a better future. "I look up at the sky." The same song, in its English version, was turned into a song about romantic loss, absent the hope. "Sayonara." There is no reason to side with one over the other; the same melody can have different lyrics. Nevertheless, in singing the melody with either set of lyrics, there is a beauty that speaks to something deep in the heart: a yearning for something good and fulfilling, whether in the past (a lost love) or the future (a hoped for possiblity.) We sing the song with this yearning in mind.
