The Gift of Perplexity

Whitehead on Plato

​There remains the final reflection, how shallow, puny, and imperfect are efforts to sound the depths in the nature of things. In philosophical dis­cussion, the merest hint of dogmatic certainty as to finality of statement is an exhibition of folly.

Alfred North Whitehead is famous for saying that “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” But it is not only Plato’s ideas that make him central in Whitehead’s eyes—it is his creative process, which includes a capacity to explore, to remain open, to dwell in perplexity, to be bedazzled. Whitehead writes:

​​"He is never entirely self-consistent, and rarely explicit and devoid of ambiguity. He feels the difficulties, and expresses his perplexities. No one could be perplexed over Aristotle’s classifications; whereas Plato moves about amid a fragmentary system like a man dazed by his own penetration.” (Adventures of Ideas, see full quotation below)

​For Whitehead, Plato is not the master builder of a system, but the faithful companion of  bedazzlement. His genius lies not in finality, but in the way he stays near his questions, allowing them to proliferate—and in his willingness to explore ideas that are not easily verbalized.

To be sure, Whitehead’s admiration for Plato extends beyond method to content. He was deeply engaged with Plato’s key metaphysical notions, which he saw as profoundly relevant even in modern times. In Adventures of Ideas, he identifies and explores seven pivotal concepts:

“The Ideas, The Physical Elements, The Psyche, The Eros, The Harmony, The Mathematical Relations, The Receptacle.”

These, he writes, “are as important for us now, as they were then at the dawn of the modern world, when civilizations of the old type were dying.” Adventures of Ideas explores each of them in some degree of depth. 

Ideas Born from Complexity, Not Control

But Whitehead also recognized that these ideas emerged out of, not apart from, a creative or spacious uncertainty. They did not descend as fixed dogmas; they arose from within a matrix of exploration, myth, dialogue, and philosophical uncertainty. Their enduring value lies not only in their content, but in the imaginative and perplexed spirit with which Plato sought them—a spirit that resists rigid systematization and welcomes nuance, ambiguity, and multiplicity.

Creative Perplexity as Philosophical Posture

That spirit is rooted in a particular kind of philosophical posture—what we might call creative or spacious perplexity. For Whitehead, this form of perplexity is not a weakness to be corrected but a virtue to be accepted—even if reluctantly—and, in this sense, a hidden gift. It is the capacity to dwell within ambiguity without shutting it down. It reflects a trust that truth is not a static possession but an evolving relationship. Plato’s dialogues do not merely lead to knowledge; they model an ongoing love of wisdom, one that matures through uncertainty rather than despite it.

Not an Obstacle but a Threshold

This is not the kind of perplexity we rush through on the way to an answer. It is not confusion to be solved like a puzzle, but an orientation of mind and heart that remains porous to mystery. The gift is hidden because it rarely feels like a gift at first. It may feel like being lost, like standing at the edge of something vast and unfinished. But in time, it can awaken new ways of seeing, feeling, and relating—to ideas, to others, to the world itself.

Many Forms of Perplexity

To be sure, there are many kinds of perplexity, in addition to the creative, capacious perplexity of the porously minded philosopher. Some forms are disorienting, anxious, even paralyzing—especially in times of grief, moral crisis, or existential upheaval. Others are defensive or evasive: fogs of indeterminacy that protect us from difficult truths. And still others are transitional thresholds—moments when the old is no longer viable and the new has not yet arrived.

What distinguishes generative or creative perplexity is its trust in the process of not-knowing. It does not idolize ambiguity, nor does it fear it. It listens. It waits. It wonders. It accepts that wisdom may arrive slowly, and that insight is often born not apart from uncertainty, but within it. This, too, is part of the philosophical inheritance Whitehead discerned in Plato: a capacity not only to think, but to stay with the questions long enough for something truly new to emerge.

Insight Within Uncertainty

And sometimes—not apart from perplexity, but within it—we experience moments of deep knowing. As Whitehead notes, “In the real world it is more important that a proposition be interesting than that it be true. The importance of truth is that it adds to interest.” In the very state of being perplexed, we may stumble upon penetrating insights that we do not immediately recognize as insights. Something in us senses truth before we can articulate it. The mind, momentarily disoriented, becomes more open to novelty.

A Philosophy that Stays With the Questions

Whitehead—whose metaphysics brims with metaphor, ambiguity, and multiple levels of interpretation—found in Plato a kindred spirit. Both saw philosophy not as a finished architecture of thought, but as a process, a becoming, a deepening conversation with reality.

Openness to this kind of perplexity does not have as its aim puzzle-solving, much less mere information-gathering. It is perplexity in search of wisdom, and sometimes the wisdom lies hidden in the perplexity itself. It is a kind of knowing amidst not-knowing, an understanding that takes shape not after confusion has been resolved, but within it.

To dwell in such perplexity is not to give up on clarity, but to recognize that clarity itself is often born through depth, patience, and vulnerability. In the end, what Whitehead admired in Plato—and perhaps what he modeled in his own philosophical adventure—is the courage to live with mystery, to think poetically as well as logically, and to trust that the questions we carry may be just as important as the answers we find.
