The Akashic Record and the Consequent Nature of God

The image—and it is but an image—the image under which this operative growth of God’s nature is best conceived, is that of a tender care that nothing be lost.
The consequent nature of God is his judgment on the world. He saves the world as it passes into the immediacy of his own life. It is the judgment of a tenderness which loses nothing that can be saved.

Questions about the Fate of the Past

• Where did that moment in the park go?
• Where did that last breath go?
• Where did that moment of trauma go?
• Where did that moment of forgiveness go?
• Where did the laughter go?
• Where did that life go?

​The questions may sound strange at first. We usually assume that the past simply passes away. Where does it go?

We know that that part of the answer is something called 'the future.'  Its effects remain: memories linger, habits continue, histories unfold, and lives influence other lives.

But what of the lived reality itself? What of the joy of the kiss, the fear surrounding the trauma, the bodily feeling of the final breath, the private hopes and disappointments of an entire life? What happens to these? Where do they go?

Is there a Cosmic Memory?

Is there a receptacle in which the past continues to exist in its lived reality, even as it fades from human awareness and recedes into the background of the present? I will call it the Akashic horizon, building upon a tradition of theosophy. The phrase calls to mind an immense cosmic library: a place in which everything that has ever happened is somehow preserved. Every thought, every feeling, every action, every intention, every life—nothing disappears.

The term akasha comes from Sanskrit and originally referred to space, sky, or a subtle ether-like medium underlying reality. In classical Hindu and Buddhist traditions, it did not mean a cosmic archive. The modern notion of Akashic Records developed largely through the late nineteenth-century spiritual movement known as the Theosophical Society. Thinkers such as Helena Petrovna Blavatsky spoke of subtle dimensions of reality and enduring records of experience. Later, Charles Webster Leadbeater developed the image of a cosmic record accessible through clairvoyance, while Rudolf Steiner spoke of an "Akasha Chronicle" containing a living spiritual history of humanity. In the twentieth century, Edgar Cayce popularized the idea for many people through his trance readings.

Why this Matters

However it might be accessed, there is something emotionally powerful about Akashic memory. There are many reasons why such an idea might matter. It may matter to individuals who hope that the truth of their lives—and of the lives of those they have loved—is not simply lost as memories fade. It may matter to those who grieve and wonder whether forgotten grandparents, lost friends, and unnoticed acts of kindness still possess some enduring reality.

It may matter to historians, who know that every historical reconstruction remains partial and fragmentary. Historians work with documents, artifacts, testimony, and traces while recognizing that the concrete reality of the past always exceeds the evidence available. What was it actually like to be a child in another century, to stand in a crowd during a revolution, or to live through war, joy, exile, or love? Something happened, but the fullness of what happened often escapes recovery.

And perhaps the idea matters more generally to anyone who worries about neglected suffering, forgotten lives, or beautiful moments that seem to disappear without a trace. Behind the image of Akashic Records may lie a simple hope: that reality itself remembers more than we do.

The Consequent Nature of God

Whitehead never spoke of Akashic Records. Yet his idea of the consequent nature of God may offer an interesting way of interpreting them.

In Process and Reality, God is the mind - the concrescing subject - in whose consciousness the universe lives and moves and has its being. We are always 'inside' God's life even if we don't know it.  The God in whose live we live is not merely an observer standing outside the world. God is a living subject who receives the world into the divine life tenderly, says Whitehead. Every experience becomes part of God's ongoing reality.

We can make a further distinction. The world itself—the totality of experiences, events, lives, and realities taken into God—becomes the objective content of God's experience. In Whiteheadian language, these become data for divine feeling. But there is also God's own subjective response to these realities. God does not merely receive the world passively, like a camera recording images or a computer storing information. God feels the world. God responds to it with divine emotions, purposes, aims, valuations, and forms of care.

Objective Content and Subjective Feeling

Thus there are two aspects of the ongoing life of God. There is the world as received by God—the universe itself as preserved within divine experience. And there is God's own experience of that world: God's feelings, harmonizations, and responses. Both belong to the life of God. The first is the world living in God; the second is God living with the world.

In the passage quoted at the outset of this page, Whitehead says that seeks an "adequate representation" of the world. But this is not simply a matter of accuracy, as if God were a perfect archivist making sure every fact is correctly recorded. It is also a matter of meaning. God seeks to receive each life and each experience in its fullness and then to harmonize it with all other lives and experiences within the divine life.

The aim is not merely preservation but integration. Every joy, every sorrow, every act of courage, every moment of fear, every creaturely experience enters into an ongoing process of relational weaving. Included as well are failures, disappointments, broken dreams, missed opportunities, regrets, and possibilities that were never realized. Human lives—and indeed all lives—are not composed solely of accomplishments and victories. They also contain absences, losses, roads not taken, and hopes that remained unfulfilled. God saves what can be saved.

The experiences do not lose their individuality; they remain themselves. But they also become part of a larger whole in which contrasts are held together and new forms of harmony become possible.

Whitehead sometimes speaks of God as the "great companion—the fellow-sufferer who understands." Understanding here means more than observing or possessing information. It means feeling the world in such a way that nothing real is lost and everything is received into a larger pattern of meaning.

More than a Cosmic Database

There is, however, an important difference between the usual picture of Akashic Records and Whitehead's view. The Akashic Records are often imagined as a cosmic database or celestial filing cabinet in which information is stored. Whitehead's God is not preserving information in this way. God is not a librarian keeping books on shelves.
What is preserved is not merely data. What is preserved is experience itself.

Whitehead writes of God receiving the world into the consequent nature, preserving actuality in an ongoing divine life. If we think in these terms, the laughter of a child, the fear of an animal, the sorrow of a forgotten person, the joy of a reunion, the sound of rain falling on a roof generations ago—these are not simply recorded facts. They become ingredients in an everlasting consciousness.

The Akashic image suggests that nothing is lost because everything is recorded. Whitehead may suggest something more intimate: Nothing is lost because everything is felt.
