For Whitehead, every actual entity in the universe is sentient. This means that it has an inner life - a life of its own - filled with feelings, emotions, memories of the past, aspirations for the immediate future, and a subjective aim for satisfaction in the immediacy of the moment. The entity at issue can be a living cell, the mind of another animal, the mind of another human being, or the mind of God. It can be a quantum event in the depths of an atom, a single moment of molecular experience, or a puff of energy in far-off outer space. - Narrowness: concentrated focus within a limited range. Certain elements are selected from the vague background and brought into heightened relevance, while others recede from attention. Narrowness can give experience clarity, purpose, and intensity, although excessive narrowness may exclude important aspects of the world.
- Width: diverse multiplicity woven into an integrated whole. A wide experience includes many different elements and coordinates them without erasing their differences. Width makes possible richness, complexity, and depth, although width without sufficient integration may lapse into triviality.
The four classifications offer a way of what is happening 'inside' every concrescning subject. All are seeking satisfaction whether consciously or unconsciously, and they are negotating what is given to their experience by balancing vagueness, narrowness, and width. Since we live in a culture that often highlights the value of clarity or focus, it is important to put in a positive word for vagueness.
Triviality: The Right Chaos
Triviality occurs when, in receiving influences from the world, there is no significant differentiation among them—whether they come from other people, bodily sensations, the natural world, or the heavens. Nor is the multiplicity gathered into a unified feeling through the transmutation of shared features. The result is an experience containing many influences but lacking a common thread, meaningful contrast, or coherent pattern.
William James’s phrase “one great blooming, buzzing confusion” offers a vivid image of triviality. Imagine the mind receiving a vast multiplicity of influences—voices, colors, bodily sensations, passing thoughts, remembered images, and surrounding movements—without either distinguishing them clearly or gathering them into a unified pattern. They are present together, yet they form no meaningful whole. Experience becomes a blooming, buzzing confusion: not an absence of feeling but a profusion of feelings that have not been ordered into a coherent unity. In Whiteheadian terms, this is triviality—a multiplicity that achieves a modicum of satisfaction but little harmony, intensity, or richness of experience.
It may seem that triviality, thus understood, could never be desirable. I suggest another possibility. If we think of triviality as a form of chaos, then, in certain circumstances, a modicum of triviality—or healthy chaos—can provide relief from excessive differentiation, focus, and order. It releases us temporarily from the demand to discriminate, organize, and make sense of everything. Moreover, healthy chaos can create an open space for the influx of novel possibilities that might otherwise go unfelt. This is how I interpret Whitehead’s suggestion that satisfying experience requires “the right chaos.”
Vagueness: A Nourishing Background
A healthy sense of vagueness plays an important role in many dimensions of life. Not everything that matters to us is clearly distinguished, conceptually defined, or brought into the foreground of consciousness. Much of what sustains experience is felt as a background presence—the many counting as one. Here are some examples offered by ChatGPT:
- Bodily awareness. We ordinarily feel the body as a unified background rather than as a collection of distinctly perceived organs, cells, and sensations. This vagueness enables us to direct attention toward particular tasks.

Narrowness: Concentrated Focus
Narrowness is not, for Whitehead, a pejorative term. It occurs when attention is concentrated on a particular object of experience, whether the object is physically perceived, mentally remembered, or imaginatively entertained. The object acquires heightened relevance against a background that remains comparatively vague, or it stands in felt contrast with other objects that are simultaneously experienced. Narrowness does not necessarily mean closed-mindedness or moral limitation. It is the concentration of experience that allows something to become vivid, distinct, and intense.
Many examples of narrowness are drawn from visual experience: seeing a single face in a crowd or focusing on a bird perched in a tree. But narrowness also occurs in auditory and conceptual experience. Here I share examples given by ChatGPT.

Such perception is an example of what Whitehead calls "perception in the mode of presentational immediacy." It is but one form of narrowness, of which there are many others. Indeed, in sleep amid dreams, there may be focused attention on objects within the dream, but the attention is not 'conscious' as in visual perception. It is pre-conscious but focussed.
Width: Breadth of Awareness
Width might also be called breadth. It names the range of objects within a multiplicity that can be felt in a focused, or narrow, way. In an experience possessing width, multiple objects are felt in their distinctiveness, each acquiring significance through its contrasts and relationships with the others. Width does not eliminate narrowness; it includes many acts of narrow differentiation within a more comprehensive whole.
Width is therefore not opposed to depth. It can be a feature of depth. An experience may feel deeper precisely because it includes a wider variety of the world in a respectful and inclusive way than do experiences with more limited horizons. Breadth without differentiation may collapse into triviality, but breadth joined with careful attention can become richness of experience.
Non-Moral Width
Width is important in aesthetic experiences that possess no obvious moral quality. A person listening to a symphony may hear the strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, melodies, harmonies, and rhythms as distinct yet interrelated elements of a single unfolding composition. A jazz musician may hear the individual voices of the piano, bass, drums, and saxophone while also feeling how they respond to one another. A reader may hold together the characters, images, emotional tones, and intersecting plots of a novel without reducing them to a single theme. In each case, satisfaction arises from experiencing many distinct elements as parts of a richly contrasted whole.
Of course, non-moral width is also a feature of the experience of other animals. Here, again, an example from ChatGPT can help. Consider a deer standing at the edge of a forest. It may simultaneously feel the scent of nearby vegetation, the direction of the wind, the calls of birds, the movement of leaves, the position of other deer, and faint sounds suggesting a distant predator. Each element retains some distinctiveness while also contributing to the deer’s unified experience of its surroundings. This is non-moral width: the inclusion of many differentiated features of the environment within a single, coordinated field of awareness. Width is also important in moral experience, which can itself be understood as a particular form of aesthetic experience. A teacher deciding how to respond to a struggling student may consider the student’s abilities, family circumstances, emotional state, past efforts, present needs, and future possibilities, while also considering the needs of other students. A community making an environmental decision may take into account workers, residents, future generations, local animals, waterways, forests, and the wider climate. A family caring for an aging relative may attend to that person’s safety, dignity, independence, fears, relationships, and desires rather than reducing the person to a medical problem.
In such cases, moral depth depends partly on width of concern. The more fully the distinct experiences and interests of others are felt and taken into account, the richer the resulting moral response can become. Moral failure often involves excessive narrowness: one person, group, interest, or goal is given concentrated importance while other relevant realities disappear into the background. Moral wisdom involves widening the field without losing attention to the uniqueness of those within it. Width at its best is not an indiscriminate inclusion of everything; it is the differentiated inclusion of many.
Whitehead speaks of one of the most important forms of width available to human beings today as “world loyalty,” a phrase he borrows from Josiah Royce. World loyalty is a width of concern that includes the local but extends beyond it to the planetary, and that includes human beings but extends beyond them to the more-than-human world. It does not require abandoning loyalty to one’s family, community, religion, culture, or nation. Rather, it places these local loyalties within a wider horizon, allowing them to be enriched—and, when necessary, corrected—by concern for the larger web of life.
World loyalty is thus an antidote to the darker sides of nationalism, religious bigotry, and ethnic idolatry. Each of these elevates a limited community into an absolute and relegates others to the margins of concern. World loyalty resists such exclusions by recognizing that every person, culture, animal, and ecosystem belongs to a wider community of becoming. It is a moral and aesthetic achievement: the capacity to feel the many worlds of the world in their differences, contrasts, and interdependence without erasing their uniqueness. In this sense, world loyalty is width of concern widened toward the whole of life.
Temporal Width: Memory and Foresight
Width also plays an important role in our experience of temporality. We can have wider or more limited apprehensions of both the past and the future. Historical awareness is a form of width in relation to the past. It enables us to place a present event within a longer story, to recognize the many people and circumstances that helped produce it, and to see possibilities obscured by an exclusive focus on the present. Such awareness can give us perspective, humility, and freedom from the illusion that our own moment is the whole of reality.
Foresight is width in relation to the future. It involves feeling a range of possible consequences, considering how present choices might affect other people and the more-than-human world, and imagining possibilities beyond immediate gratification. A community deciding whether to develop a forest, for example, may consider not only present economic benefits but also the future of local families, wildlife, waterways, and generations yet unborn.
Temporal width thus enlarges the experiential horizon in both directions. Memory and historical awareness deepen the present by bringing wider dimensions of the past into it; anticipation and foresight deepen it by admitting a broader range of possible futures. A satisfying and responsible present can thereby become a meeting place in which a richly apprehended past and an imaginatively anticipated future are gathered together.
Relevance of the Four Categories
The fourfold classification of triviality, vagueness, narrowness, and width offers many possibilities for further exploration. One is to apply these notions to the question of meaning in human life, particularly in an age when some—perhaps many—feel themselves caught in a crisis of meaning. From this perspective, meaning may depend not on width or narrowness alone but on their creative interplay: the focused appreciation of particular people, places, activities, and ideas within a wider horizon of relationships and significance.
Another possibility is theological. We might ask how the divine reality—God—both embodies and seeks narrowness and width: narrowness as tender love for each particular creature in its uniqueness, and width as the inclusive reception of all creatures into the divine life. Divine experience would then consist not in an undifferentiated awareness of everything but in a differentiated inclusiveness in which every creature is known and felt both as itself and in relation to all others.
These categories may also prove useful in counseling and psychotherapy. They can help counselors and clients notice whether experience has become chaotic and fragmented, vague and difficult to name, narrowly fixated on a particular fear or memory, or widened to include neglected feelings, relationships, memories, and possibilities. Counseling may sometimes help a person differentiate what is vague, loosen what has become excessively narrow, discover meaningful focus amid triviality, or widen the field of concern without sacrificing depth. The aim would not be to eliminate any of these modes but to seek the form and degree of each that might contribute to healing and richness of experience.
Still another possibility is to use these categories to imagine what may be happening in the experience of other sentient beings—both those relatively familiar to us, such as dogs, birds, and other mammals, and those whose modes of experience are more alien, such as octopuses, insects, microorganisms, and creatures inhabiting the ocean depths. Their worlds may be organized around smells, vibrations, electrical fields, chemical gradients, pressure changes, or forms of sensitivity quite different from our own.
Indeed, if we take Whitehead’s panexperientialism—or, as I prefer to call it, panprehensionality—seriously, these categories may help us think speculatively about the mental and physical poles of events at every level of the universe, from the submicroscopic to the galactic. They invite us to consider forms of feeling, responsiveness, and perhaps even intelligence that do not depend upon brains or biological substrates. Triviality, vagueness, narrowness, and width may therefore be more than categories of human psychology. They may name basic possibilities within the adventure of experience itself.
Additionally, these categories may help us understand and appreciate extraordinary states of consciousness, including mystical, meditative, dreamlike, and psychedelic experiences. Such states may involve a loosening of habitual narrowness, an intensified awareness of ordinarily vague backgrounds, a sometimes chaotic influx of impressions, or a dramatic widening of the experiential field. Their aesthetic character may lie in the novel relationships they create among vagueness, focus, multiplicity, contrast, and breadth. They may be illuminating or overwhelming, healing or destabilizing, depending partly on whether these elements achieve a satisfying form of harmony and intensity.
Finally—and closest to home for most people—the categories may illuminate human relationships at many levels: marriage, family life, community life, and national life. Relationships need narrowness in the form of focused attention to particular people and their unique needs, but they also need width: an awareness of the larger network of experiences, histories, responsibilities, and perspectives involved. They need vagueness, too: a shared background of trust, affection, memory, and belonging that is deeply felt without always being brought into conscious focus. And they may occasionally benefit from a touch of triviality, or healthy chaos—from playfulness, spontaneity, and temporary release from the pressure to organize and resolve everything.
Difficulties arise when these modes become unbalanced: when one person or group receives exclusive attention, when significant differences remain indefinitely vague, when multiplicity deteriorates into fragmentation, or when breadth becomes so diffuse that no individual is genuinely seen. Whether in a marriage, a family, a local community, or a nation, satisfying relationships require the creative interplay of shared backgrounds, focused care, differentiated inclusiveness, and openness to novelty.
Whitehead on Triviality, Vagueness, Narrowness, and Width
from Process and Reality
"Triviality arises from lack of coordination in the factors of the datum, so that no feeling arising from one factor is reinforced by any feeling arising from another factor. In other words, the specific constitution of the actual entity in question is not such as to elicit depth of feeling from contrasts thus presented. Incompatibility has predominated over contrast. Then the process can involve no coordinating intensification either from a reinforced narrowness, or from enhancement of relevance due to the higher contrasts derived from harmonized width. Triviality is due to the wrong sort of width; that is to say, it is due to width without any reinforced narrowness in its higher categories. Harmony is this combination of width and narrowness. Some narrow concentration on a limited set of effects is essential for depth; but the difference arises in the levels of the categories of contrast involved. A high category involves unplumbed potentiality for the realization of depth in its lower components. Thus ‘triviality’ arises from excess of incompatible differentiation.
On the other hand, ‘vagueness’ is due to excess of identification. In the datum the objectifications of various actual entities are replicas with faint coordinations of perspective contrast. Under these conditions the contrasts between the various objectifications are faint, and there is deficiency in supplementary feeling discriminating the objects from each other. There can thus be intensive narrowness in the prehension of the whole nexus, by reason of the common character, combined with vagueness, which is the irrelevance of the differences between the definite actual entities of the nexus. The objectified entities reinforce each other by their likeness. But there is lack of differentiation among the component objectifications owing to the deficiency in relevant contrasts.
In this way a group of actual entities contributes to the satisfaction as one extensive whole. It is divisible, but the actual divisions, and their sporadic differences of character, have sunk into comparative irrelevance beside the one character belonging to the whole and any of its parts.
By reason of vagueness, many count as one, and are subject to indefinite possibilities of division into such multifold unities. ‘When there is such vague prehension, the differences between the actual entities so prehended are faint chaotic factors in the environment, and have thereby been relegated to irrelevance. Thus vagueness is an essential condition for the narrowness which is one condition for depth of relevance. It enables a background to contribute its relevant quota, and it enables a social group in the foreground to gain concentrated relevance for its community of character. The right chaos, and the right vagueness, are jointly required for any effective harmony.
