Whitehead's Philosophy: Interconnectedness of All Entities
There are two key ideas in Whitehead's philosophy that give rise to the notion that all entities are composed of, and caused by, all other entities: experience in the mode of causal efficacy and simple physical feelings.
Experience in the Mode of Causal Efficacy In Whitehead's framework, "experience in the mode of causal efficacy" is fundamental to understanding the interconnectedness and causality of all entities, from the atomic to the divine. This mode of experience entails being and feeling affected by another actuality,
Being Affected by another Actuality: At the core of this experience is the notion of being influenced by another reality. And more specifically being influenced by the emotions of other entities. This influence or affect is an act of reception. A primary example in human life is the experience of our own bodies, which function independently yet continuously impact our conscious experience. Breathing, as an automatic and constant process, exemplifies this mode of causal efficacy, We are breathed by our breathing.
Simple Physical Feelings The second crucial concept in Whitehead's philosophy is "simple physical feelings." These feelings are the basis of experience in the mode of causal efficacy. Each occasion or moment of experience (referred to as a concrescing subject) inherits the emotions of the previous occasion through simple physical feelings. This process involves an energy flow from one occasion to the next, creating a continuous chain of experiences and emotions.
Basis of Causality: This energy flow and appropriation of emotions form the basis of causality in both the world and the universe. It is through these simple physical feelings that one occasion affects another, establishing a causal relationship.
Universal Application: These physical feelings are not exclusive to entities with bodies but extend to all actual entities, including those at the quantum level within an atom. Even in the microscopic realm of quantum events, there are simple physical feelings that contribute to the larger process of causation. If entities exist in other regions of the space-time continuum, they too would possess such feelings, indicating a universal characteristic of all actual entities, regardless of their location or scale.
Divine Aspect Whitehead extends this concept to the divine, specifically in what he calls "the consequent nature of God." In this aspect, God experiences and feels all the occurrences in the universe, integrating them into the divine nature. This means that God, like all other entities, is partly composed of and influenced by the experiences and feelings of other entities.
Implications
Interconnectedness of All Things: All entities are partly composed of and caused by other entities. This creates a web of interconnectedness where every occasion is influenced by its predecessors and influences its successors. This interconnectedness is not limited to a specific type of entity but is a universal characteristic across all dimensions and scales of existence.
Holistic View of the Universe: Whitehead’s philosophy suggests a holistic view where the universe and all within it, including God, are interrelated through the continuous flow of simple physical feelings. This interconnected web of causality emphasizes the dynamic and relational nature of reality.
In short, Whitehead's ideas of "experience in the mode of causal efficacy" and "simple physical feelings" underscore the profound interconnectedness and causal relationships that form the fabric of reality. Whether at the quantum level or within the divine nature of God, these feelings are the fundamental building blocks of experience and causality. This philosophy invites us to view the universe as an intricate network of interdependent entities, each influencing and being influenced by others in a continuous flow of experience and emotion.
