Creative Lamentation
when heartbreak and grief are combined
with a resolve to survive such that,
despite the persistence of pain,
something beautiful emerges.
Creative Lamentation is one way that God works in the human heart. It is a coalescence of grief and resolve after suffering a disaster or a loss. It belongs to individuals and societies. The lament belongs to God and to those who is lamenting. They are co-lamenting. The creativity lies in the combination of grief and resolve: the creation of a mutually supportive contrast in the heart. Here, too, there is co-creativity: both human and divine. The resolve to survive turns the grief into something positive, something constructive, something that adds beauty to the world, without hiding from the pain. The disaster and loss do not disappear, but their energy is transmuted a quiet kind of vitality: not the vitality of happiness or satisfaction, but that of patience, unfettered endurance, until, in time, new life emerges. "MorganEve Swain began The Huntress and Holder of Hands as a vessel for exploring grief and growth. Originally home-recorded using multi-layer tracks of voice and strings, Swain pulled creative energy from the experience of losing her husband Dave Lamb to leukemia and the bond they shared as the duo Brown Bird. With the ambition to perform live and explore past personal grief, The Huntress and Holder of Hands expanded to a 5-musician band, employing cello, string bass, electric bass, voice and drums, with Swain primarily on five-string viola and guitar. The band builds harmony, string and bass-driven pieces influenced by Post-Metal, Blues and Americana and offers an intense musical and lyrical experience that explores love, loss, power and strength." |
