God and the Delivery Driver in
a Threatened and Unjust World
“Delivery drivers face a corona virus without sick pay, insurance, or sanitizer.” So we read in Reuters on March 25, 2020.
Yes, they are heroes for the sheltered among us. So are home health care nurses and many others who work on short-term contract employment. Like health care workers they are on the front line, although they rarely receive applause.
But they have families to care for and bills to pay. They need sick pay and health insurance. They are victims of an unjust system, and their numbers are growing. Their employers include Uber, Bite Squad, and, of course, Amazon. Kristin Erikson, a content marketing specialist, wrote in 2018: "Permanent jobs are becoming more scarce. Many companies are reducing staff to cut costs. Hiring permanent employees is a lot more expensive than hiring freelancers or contractors for individual projects. On demand workers account for 34% of the US workforce and that number is expected to grow to 43% by 2020." It's now 2020.
In the spiritual alphabet of humanity, “J” is for justice. Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) invite us to imagine that the very Soul of the universe is present in the word as an inwardly felt lure, not simply to be grateful for others but also to change systems by which they are oppressed.
