How Does it Feel?
A Theology of Vibes
As a practicing musician, I am always trying to get a feel for the vibes of the people I play for. The crowds I have in mind are not large. They are the ten or twelve folks with Alzheimer's for whom I do singalong music twice a week. I want us to enjoy a shared vibe: a sense of calm, joy, and fun. The vibe may last only for forty five minutes, or maybe just ten seconds, but in that time there is a shared mood: a vibe.
This got me wondering: has anyone developed a theology of vibes? Perhaps so, but I'm not aware of it. So, I offer on this page the beginnings of a process theology of vibes. It can help if, to begin with, I say more about what I mean by vibes.
Vibes as Share Emotions
By vibes I mean the emotional tones through which we experience one another, situations, the natural world, and places in a given moment. Whitehead calls these tones or moods "subjective forms." They are subjective in the sense that we can feel them, but not in the sense that they are strictly private. Vibes are objective in the sense that can share them and feel them as more than us. When you walk into a coffee shop with a certain vibe (see below) you can feel the vibe and it is more than you. You walk into it and take your seat. Or if you are participating in a singalong with friends with Alzheimer's, you can also feel the vibe as more than you. Philosophers might say that vibes are intersubjective; I would add that they are public or objective, too.
In the house of vibes there are many rooms, some positive and some negative. Examples include chill vibes that make us relaxed, violent vibes that frighten us, nurturing vibes that make us feel safe and whole, melancholy vibes that make us feel sad, calm vibes that give us a sense of peace, anxious vibes that make us nervous, and hospitable vibes that make us feel welcomed. My own aim in playing music for folks with Alzheimer's is to help elicit hospitable vibes.
In process theology, vibes (shared moods and emotions) are part of the very nature of reality. They are as real in their way as atoms and molecules and, indeed, even atoms and molecules have their vibes. The living whole of the universe, God, is an inwardly felt lure, within each and all of us, to help created and enjoy hospitable and life-nourishing vibes as we interact with one another. And God has a vibe, too. Process theologians think of vibes of God as loving, peaceful, tender, healing, and creative in non-controlling ways. The vibes we help create are not mere fluff compared to the solid objects of the world. They are how we experience those objects together.
Below, then, I offer some key ideas in a theology of vibes. Each of the ideas deserves greater attention and exploration. The list is but a springboard for reflection.
1. Metaphysics of Vibes. Vibes are as fundamental to reality as solid objects. You cannot see them with your eyes, but you can feel them as parts of the world around you. They are the energetic presences of other people, the natural world, particular objects in space, and places. They are the energy that is given off by actual entities as they form themselves in the space-time continuum. In the language of Whitehead, they are the "objective immortality" of those entities and nexus as including certain "subjective forms" or emotions that affect the future and "propositions" or lures for feeling. Vibes are how an entity or nexus affects the future. They are not subjects in their own right; they do not make decisions. But they are not abstractions of the mind either, like mathematical objects intellectually conceived: the square root of two, for example. They are felt presences: vibes.
2. The Fallacy of Misplaced Concreteness: It is tempting to think of vibes as accidental to entities, as if the entity is one thing and its vibes another. But for Whitehead, this is not the case. Actual entities and nexus of entities are in their vibes no less than the locations from which the vibes emanate. Think of a person who walks into a room with vibes of her own. She "lights up a room" with her vibrant energy. She is in her body, to be sure, but also in her vibes. Or think of a person who conveys a sense of peace and calm, who has a non-anxious and comforting presence. He is in his body, too, but also in his vibes. To think otherwise is to fall into what Whitehead calls "the fallacy of simple location." Actual entities, by virtue of their vibes, are not simply located. They are spread out, like aromas or fragrances.
3. Vibes as Relational: It may be tempting to think that vibes are really but a figment of the imagination of those who feel them, as mere projections. This is not the case. They come from the entities themselves as felt and interpreted by those who experience them. They are "objective" in the sense that they come from the entities, and also "subjective" in the sense that part of their vitality and identity consists of how they are felt. They are relational. Their interpretation depends not only on their sources but also on their recipients. What I may experience as a "cozy" coffee shop, another may experience as a "suffocating" coffee shop. Vibes are like poems or passages from scripture. Their interpretations depend on context.
4. Atomic Vibes: It may be tempting to think that vibes are only experienceable by sentient beings and perhaps by human beings. Not so, at least for process philosophers. They believe that, when atoms interact with other atoms, they feel their vibes: that is, they feel the atmosphere or emotional aura of the other atom and react in some way. I realize that this can sound anthropomorphic. Most people are not sure atoms feel anything at all, and if atoms do feel anything, they are not sure they feel vibes. Most people think that vibes, if they exist at all, are likely emergent properties rather than fundamental ones. But process philosophers disagree. They believe that energy is a form of feeling and that wherever there is energy, there is something like feeling. Energetic feelings go all the way down into the depths of matter and all the way out into the heavens. Yes, even atoms have vibes.
5. Mathematical Vibes: Mathematics, often seen as an abstract and logical discipline, also has its own vibes. The elegance of a well-constructed proof, the beauty of a symmetrical equation, and the satisfaction of solving a complex problem generate specific emotional and intellectual vibes. Mathematicians often describe their work as having an aesthetic quality, where certain solutions "feel" more elegant or beautiful than others. These mathematical vibes are not just about correctness but also about the harmony and simplicity that resonate with our sense of order and beauty. Engaging with mathematics can produce vibes of clarity, curiosity, and intellectual joy, demonstrating that even abstract concepts can have a profound emotional impact.
6. Scientific Vibes: Scientific vibes are the moods and atmospheres associated with the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. These vibes are often characterized by curiosity, rigor, and a sense of wonder. Positive scientific vibes can be felt in research laboratories, academic conferences, and educational settings where intellectual inquiry and collaborative exploration are encouraged. They evoke feelings of excitement and inspiration as new insights and discoveries unfold. Conversely, negative scientific vibes can arise from overly competitive environments, lack of support, or ethical breaches, leading to feelings of stress and disillusionment. Cultivating positive scientific vibes involves fostering a culture of openness, ethical integrity, and a passion for learning.
7. Nutritional Vibes: The food we consume carries its own vibes, influencing our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Fresh, wholesome foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts often carry positive, vibrant vibes that can nourish and energize us. These foods are typically associated with life-giving properties, grown with care, and embodying the vitality of the earth. In contrast, highly processed foods, laden with artificial ingredients and chemicals, might carry more negative vibes, contributing to feelings of lethargy or imbalance. The vibes of our food are not only determined by their nutritional content but also by their source and the care with which they were produced. For instance, food grown sustainably and organically tends to carry a more positive, nurturing vibe than food produced through harmful agricultural practices. By tuning into the vibes of the food we eat, we can make choices that support our overall well-being and foster a deeper connection with the natural world.
8. Healing Vibes: Healing vibes are those that promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In healthcare settings, creating a positive and comforting atmosphere can significantly enhance the healing process. This includes the calming design of hospital rooms, the gentle bedside manner of healthcare providers, and the supportive presence of family and friends. Healing vibes are not limited to physical health but extend to mental and emotional health as well, encompassing practices like meditation, therapy, and community support, which foster environments conducive to recovery and well-being.
9. Nurturing Vibes: Nurturing vibes are those that create a sense of care, support, and growth. These vibes are often found in environments where individuals feel safe, valued, and encouraged to thrive. This can be seen in loving families, supportive friendships, and educational settings where teachers foster a positive learning atmosphere. Nurturing vibes are characterized by warmth, empathy, and attentiveness. They are essential for healthy development, whether in children, relationships, or communities. Creating nurturing vibes involves active listening, kindness, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. In spiritual contexts, nurturing vibes can also be seen in pastoral care, where the spiritual leader provides guidance and support to their congregation. These vibes contribute to an environment where individuals feel connected, loved, and empowered to reach their full potential.
10. Places with Vibes: It is also tempting to think of vibes as always produced by one entity, as the example of a person entering a room may suggest. But that is not the case. Vibes can come from aggregates of entities, from what Whitehead calls nexus. As I write this, I am sitting in a local coffee shop with a good vibe. When you walk in, you feel a sense of immediate warmth and comfort, like stepping into a cozy sanctuary. The vibe is a bit like a process of concrescence; an activity by which the many become one. In the case of this coffee shop, the vibe emerges from the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, soft warm lighting, comfortable seating, friendly baristas, interesting art on the walls, touches of greenery, ambient music (soft acoustic), a community feel (local artwork and bulletin boards for community events), freshly displayed pastries, and quiet corners that promise retreat from the compulsive busyness of life. I am sitting in one of those quiet corners. The owners of the coffee shop, a young family, have designed it to create this vibe. Interior designers and small business owners know all about vibes.
11. Terrestrial Vibes: Nature's vibes encompass a rich tapestry of feelings that can profoundly impact our well-being. The rustling of leaves in a gentle breeze, the rhythmic ebb and flow of ocean waves, and the chorus of birds at dawn create a soothing ambiance that calms the mind and nurtures the soul. These natural rhythms and sounds, often perceived as positive or healing vibes, can evoke a sense of peace and connectedness, reminding us of our place within the greater web of life. However, nature's vibes are not limited to tranquility; they also include the awe-inspiring power of a thunderstorm, the eerie stillness of a dense forest at night, and the raw, untamed energy of a wild animal. These diverse sensations remind us of the complexity and dynamism of the natural world, offering a full spectrum of experiences that enrich our lives and deepen our understanding of the environment around us.
12. Animal Vibes: Animal vibes are the unique energies and emotional atmospheres that animals exude. These vibes can be felt in the presence of pets, wildlife, and other animals, each bringing its own distinctive aura. For example, a dog may emit vibes of loyalty and companionship, while a bird might exude a sense of freedom and lightness. These vibes can significantly impact human emotions, providing comfort, joy, and a sense of connection to the animal kingdom.
13. Plant Vibes: Plant vibes are the energies and emotional atmospheres created by plants and vegetation. The presence of greenery, flowers, and trees can generate vibes of tranquility, growth, and renewal. These vibes are often experienced in gardens, forests, and indoor spaces adorned with plants, contributing to a sense of calm and well-being. The act of tending to plants and observing their growth can also foster positive vibes, enhancing our connection to nature.
14. Water Vibes: Water vibes encompass the emotional and sensory experiences associated with bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams. The sound of flowing water, the sight of waves crashing, or the feel of a gentle stream can evoke feelings of peace, clarity, and rejuvenation. Water vibes are often associated with cleansing and renewal, providing a soothing and restorative atmosphere.
15. Fire Vibes: Fire vibes are the energies and emotional atmospheres associated with fire. The warmth and light of a fire can create feelings of comfort, security, and passion. Whether it's a cozy fireplace, a campfire, or a candle's flame, fire vibes can foster a sense of intimacy and connection. However, fire also has a destructive side, and its vibes can evoke feelings of danger and urgency, reminding us of its powerful and transformative nature.
16. Weather Vibes: Weather vibes are the moods and energies generated by different weather conditions. A sunny day can produce vibes of joy and energy, while a rainy day might evoke feelings of calm and introspection. Stormy weather can generate a sense of excitement or tension, and snowy weather can bring about feelings of coziness and tranquility. These vibes influence our emotional states and can impact our activities and interactions.
17. Galactic Vibes: Galactic vibes are the moods through which we experience the vastness of the cosmos, with awe being the major one. These vibes arise from contemplating the immensity of the universe, the beauty of distant galaxies, and the mystery of the stars. Galactic vibes evoke a sense of wonder and insignificance in the face of the infinite, inspiring us to reflect on our place in the universe. They can be felt when stargazing on a clear night, watching a meteor shower, or studying images from telescopes that reveal the grandeur of space. Galactic vibes connect us to the cosmos and expand our awareness beyond the immediate and the mundane, fostering a sense of unity with the vast, ever-expanding universe.
18. Family Vibes: Family vibes are the emotional and energetic atmospheres created within family units. These vibes can range from warm, supportive, and nurturing to tense, conflicted, and stressful. Positive family vibes are characterized by love, trust, and open communication, fostering an environment where members feel safe and valued. Negative family vibes, on the other hand, may arise from unresolved conflicts, lack of communication, or external stressors. Family vibes play a crucial role in shaping individual well-being and development, influencing how members interact with the world outside the family unit.
19. Workplace Vibes: Workplace vibes are the moods and energies present within professional environments. These vibes can significantly affect productivity, morale, and overall job satisfaction. Positive workplace vibes are marked by collaboration, mutual respect, and a sense of purpose, creating an atmosphere where employees feel motivated and supported. Negative workplace vibes, such as those stemming from high-stress levels, poor management, or toxic behaviors, can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and high turnover rates. Cultivating positive workplace vibes involves fostering open communication, recognizing achievements, and promoting a healthy work-life balance.
20. Church Vibes: Church vibes are the emotional and spiritual atmospheres experienced within places of worship. These vibes can range from reverent and solemn to joyous and uplifting, depending on the nature of the service and the community. Positive church vibes are characterized by a sense of belonging, spiritual connection, and communal support, fostering an environment where individuals feel inspired and nurtured in their faith. Negative church vibes, on the other hand, may arise from rigid dogmatism, exclusionary practices, or internal conflicts. Church vibes play a significant role in shaping the spiritual and emotional well-being of congregants, influencing their experience of worship and their sense of connection to the divine and to one another.
21. Public Vibes: Public spaces, such as parks, libraries, and community centers, have their own unique vibes that influence how people feel and interact within them. A well-maintained park with lush greenery, playgrounds, and walking trails can create a vibe of relaxation and community, encouraging social interactions and outdoor activities. Conversely, neglected or unsafe public spaces can generate negative vibes, leading to feelings of discomfort and alienation. Urban planners and community leaders play a key role in shaping the vibes of public spaces to foster inclusive and vibrant communities.
22. Virtual Vibes: In our increasingly digital world, virtual spaces also generate vibes. Online communities, social media interactions, and virtual environments have their own unique atmospheres that can significantly impact our emotional states. A supportive online group can create a vibe of belonging and acceptance, while a heated online debate can generate tension and hostility. Virtual vibes are shaped by the tone of conversations, the design of digital spaces, and the shared experiences of users. These vibes are real and influential, affecting our mental and emotional well-being just as much as physical environments.
23. Political Vibes: Politics is deeply intertwined with vibes. Political leaders, campaigns, and movements generate specific vibes that can influence public sentiment and behavior. Positive vibes of hope, unity, and progress can inspire and mobilize people, while negative vibes of fear, anger, and division can polarize and alienate. The vibe of a political rally, the tone of a speech, or the atmosphere of a debate all contribute to the collective emotional landscape of a society. Understanding and navigating these political vibes is crucial for fostering healthy, constructive political engagement.
24. National Vibes: The collective mood of a nation, shaped by its culture, history, and current events, creates national vibes. These vibes can be felt during times of celebration, such as national holidays or major sporting events, where a sense of unity and pride prevails. Conversely, during periods of crisis or political turmoil, national vibes can become tense and anxious. National leaders, media, and cultural institutions all contribute to shaping these vibes, influencing how citizens perceive and respond to their country's challenges and opportunities.
25. Artistic Vibes: Art has a profound ability to create and convey vibes. Visual art, music, literature, theater, and film all evoke specific emotional and atmospheric responses. A painting can radiate serenity or chaos, a piece of music can uplift or sadden, and a film can transport us to different worlds with distinct vibes. Artists, through their creative expressions, tap into the deep reservoirs of human experience, channeling vibes that resonate with audiences on a visceral level. Art not only reflects the vibes of its time but also shapes and transforms them, offering new perspectives and emotional landscapes.
26. Deceptive Vibes: Deceptive vibes are those that give a false impression or mislead others. These vibes can emanate from individuals who present a facade that hides their true intentions or from environments that seem welcoming but have hidden dangers. Deceptive vibes can create confusion and mistrust, leading people to make decisions based on inaccurate perceptions. Recognizing and discerning deceptive vibes is crucial for protecting oneself and making informed choices.
27. Evil Vibes: Evil vibes are those that carry a sense of malevolence or harm. These vibes can be felt in places where negative events have occurred, in the presence of individuals with harmful intentions, or in environments that foster cruelty and suffering. Evil vibes evoke feelings of fear, discomfort, and distress, and can have a profoundly unsettling effect on those who experience them. Identifying and avoiding evil vibes is important for maintaining personal safety and well-being.
28. Divine Vibes: In many spiritual traditions, divine vibes are the felt presence of the sacred or the holy. These vibes can be experienced in places of worship, during religious rituals, or in moments of profound spiritual insight. They evoke feelings of awe, reverence, peace, and connection with a higher power. In process theology, divine vibes are seen as the gentle, loving presence of God, luring us toward beauty, harmony, and creative transformation. Experiencing and responding to divine vibes is considered a way of participating in the divine life, fostering a deeper sense of purpose and meaning.
29. Discerning Vibes: Discernment involves the ability to sense and interpret the vibes of different situations, people, and places. It requires a heightened awareness and sensitivity to the subtle emotional and energetic currents that surround us. In spiritual traditions, discerning vibes is often linked to intuitive and contemplative practices, helping individuals navigate their lives with wisdom and insight. Whether it's choosing the right path in life, understanding the dynamics of a relationship, or making important decisions, discerning vibes helps us align with our deeper values and the greater good.
30. Hope-Giving Vibes: Novel vibes are unexpected and surprising feelings that inspire hope and renewal. These vibes often arise in moments of serendipity, innovation, or sudden beauty that catch us off guard and uplift our spirits. They can be experienced when encountering a random act of kindness, witnessing an unanticipated positive change in a community, or discovering a new passion or talent. Novel vibes remind us of the potential for change and the ever-present possibility of goodness and creativity in the world. They are the sparks that ignite optimism and encourage us to envision and strive for a better future.
31. Constructive Vibe Creation: Constructive vibe creation is a co-creative process attuned to divine vibes and the needs of the world. It involves consciously fostering positive, nurturing, and healing vibes in our surroundings and interactions. By being attuned to divine vibes and responding to the needs of the world, individuals and communities can create environments that promote well-being, growth, and harmony. This process requires mindfulness, empathy, and a commitment to fostering positive change, reflecting a deep connection to the divine and a responsibility to contribute to the greater good.
32. The Ultimacy of Vibes: Vibes are the heart of reality and even more fundamental than the movement of objects in space. The energetic and emotional presences we experience as vibes are the true essence of existence, influencing and shaping the material world. Vibes are not secondary to physical objects but are the primary forces that give rise to and sustain all forms of life and matter. Understanding and harmonizing with these fundamental vibes is seen as key to experiencing the fullness of reality and fostering a more connected and vibrant world.
33. We Are Vibes, Too: We, as human beings, are also vibes. Our presence, emotions, and interactions emit energetic fields that influence and shape the world around us. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions generate vibes that impact our environment and the people we interact with. Recognizing that we are vibes highlights the interconnectedness of all existence and our role in co-creating the reality we experience. By cultivating positive and constructive vibes within ourselves, we contribute to the overall harmony and well-being of the larger world, aligning our personal energies with the greater cosmic flow.

10. Places with Vibes: It is also tempting to think of vibes as always produced by one entity, as the example of a person entering a room may suggest. But that is not the case.
