A young girl asks her grandmother, "What is your secret? How have you become so wise? What is the art of living?"
Her grandmother responds, "It is to inhabit your situation. This doesn't mean you can't reach for the stars. But it means that whatever happens to you, wherever you are, you can 'inhabit' your situation with freedom, courage, compassion, and honesty."
"And does God control the situation?," asks the girl. "No," says her grandmother. "God gives you the strength to inhabit."
Prompted by insights from Epictetus, Eleanor Roosevelt, and AN Whitehead, Patricia Adams Farmer offers a reflection on what this inhabiting can look like.
