​Imagine yourself as a high school basketball coach. Or, if that's not your sport, choose another: football, soccer, volleyball, rugby, hockey (field or ice), baseball, softball, water polo, cricket, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee. You recognize the importance that sports plays in your players' lives and in your own. You are also impressed by the role it plays in bringing people together from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. You want your athletes to see their own work and practice as a service to the world and not simply a service to themselves. At the beginning of the season you write them a letter.

Letter from my Coach

Dear Team,

I share your passion for victory and believe that our hard work will result in a successful season. I also believe that we can be a force for positive change in society. Joining our team offers you the chance to connect with people from various backgrounds, build respectful relationships, and foster a supportive environment. 

My coaching style emphasizes inclusivity and openness, valuing each individual's contribution. Winning is an important objective, but personal growth and development are even more significant. As an athlete, you face unique challenges, and I am dedicated to providing you with guidance and support to overcome obstacles and find personal fulfillment.

Our ultimate objective is not to achieve personal accolades, but to make a better world. Connecting with something larger than ourselves, within us yet beyond us, is essential for achieving this goal. Different people refer to the larger something in different ways: God, the Universe, Life, Allah, the Dao, or Love. I encourage you to find your connection to it. I'll speak of it as the universal Spirit.

Please think of Spirit as on the side of life as a whole, including our opponents. Being in touch with it reminds us that winning and losing basketball games are only small components of life, and somewhat trivial compared to what so many people suffer and experience. 

Connectedness to Spirit implies being gracious in triumph and defeat. The Spirit does not classify the world as winners and losers, and the concepts of winning and losing counter to its nurturing embrace. Being connected with Spirit means being humble and kind-hearted, standing with others instead of against them.

As I see things, Spirit is not simply about personal fulfillment but also just and loving community. My aim is to empower and inspire you to become an agent of positive transformation in the world, embodying the principles of the beloved community, which Martin Luther King Jr. identified as creativity, compassion, inclusivity, participation, and respect for all forms of life. Today, beloved communities are desperately needed, and we can make a difference by setting an example.

While I still hope that we will win games and that you will improve your athletic skills, we must keep things in perspective. Bodily skills, strength, and agility are wonderful aspects of life, but spiritual skills such as compassion, humility, respect, courage, gratitude, and love for life are more important. A game is only a game, and the stakes are insignificant compared to the world's greater needs.

​As you play for our team, I hope that you will become a beacon of hope in your unique way. If you do, we will have "won" regardless of the game's score or your performance.
