The Future and the Past: We are in between
"Bouquet Kyiv Stage 2021 is a festival projected into the future. Nowadays the subject of the Future excites considerable indefiniteness and anxiety, specifically upon completion of the dramatic 2020, which we have endured. At present, it is difficult to rely upon the models of the past, as the majority of them are no longer viable. In addition, our present is so changeable and unpredictable that it does not provide us with secure support points. We have devised a formula of the future for ourselves: it is comprised of both understanding of our past and awareness of our future.
"The Future and the Past - We are in between" - by means of the language of art. The art itself is endowed with the gift of sensing the future, being its herald, reflecting the future by force of different forms of art."

"We, Between Past and Future"
The "Catharsis" Exhibition at the Bouquet Kyiv Stage in 2021
opening of the exhibition by Johann-Georg Pinzel, Francis Olendzky, and Alexander Zhyvotkov
"In my curatorial text for the exhibition, I explain that among the interpretations of catharsis we can distinguish the catharsis of pathos and the catharsis of reflection. In the first case, catharsis is the moment of emotional culmination, it is almost a state of affect. It is at this moment of extreme emotional tension that the figures of Johann-Georgy Pinzel and Francis Olendzky are depicted. These sculptural works were supposed to arouse empathic sympathy among Christian parishioners for Christian saints, but they still make a strong impression on visitors to the exhibition.
The catharsis of pathos is followed by the catharsis of reflections - the purification of the soul from passions and related suffering, and thus the achievement of moral balance and peace. This is the moment of "going beyond oneself", which ends with the return and realization of one's own spiritual essence. This is about Zhyvotkov's works, through which the whole complex and rich way of human life is viewed, not moments of emotional extremes."

In Process
Always we are between the present and the future; always we are in process. But you in Kyiv and your fellow Ukrainians are aware of this ever more deeply than we are, because you are trapped in a war not of your making. Your families, your friends, your loved ones – all are trapped. And, yes, your future is uncertain. But your courage, your culture, and your example, are an inspiration to the world, and we send our prayers your way. May our leaders have the wisdom to know how to help you. May some flowers in Bouquet Kyiv Stage blossom in the future that you cannot envision yet. We'll be making bouquets, too.
