"One development in Whitehead’s conceptuality is often ignored, and he himself makes no statement about the way that it requires reformulation of earlier statements, even in the categoreal scheme. We continue to speak of Whitehead as having two basic types of feelings, physical and conceptual. But Whitehead eventually found it necessary to add a third, strain feelings. That there are three basic types of feeling is clear, but he never explicitly states this; so it is easily overlooked by his readers."

What are Strain Feelings?

They are a third type of feeling - different from, and in addition to, physical and conceptual feelings.

They are feelings of the locus (the region) on which eternal objects are projected in presentational immediacy. 

If we are looking at a picture on a wall, the locus is the region on the wall, where the picture hangs, in which the colors and shapes appear.  And if we turn our backs and look into a mirror, seeing the picture in the mirror, the locus is the region in the mirror where the colors and shapes appear. Strain feelings are "feelings" of the locus.

Strain feelings also provide a locus by which we locate ourselves in the here and now of the moment.  They show us where we are, in comparison to where the rest of the world is.  The picture on the wall is "over there" and we are "here."

Additionally, says Whitehead, strain feelings also provide a sense of straightness (as in straight lines) upon which measurement depends.  And they reveal the space-time contiunum, the extensive continuum, in which we live.

In all of these ways, strain feelings offer us our primary sense of space and movement.

2. Conceptual Feelings of Pure Potentialities
   Conceptual feelings involve prehending or grasping "pure potentialities" or abstract possibilities. These potentialities are what Whitehead refers to as "eternal objects," which are pure possibilities that can be realized in the physical world. Conceptual feelings represent how an entity engages with ideas, forms, or concepts that are not yet actualized but could be. They are more abstract than physical feelings because they deal with potentials rather than concretes. For instance, the potential for warmth, the idea of warmth, would be part of a conceptual feeling.
3. Geometrical (Strain) Feelings of Spatial Relations
   Whitehead describes "strain" feelings, also known as geometrical feelings, as the way an actual entity feels spatial relations and tensions within its environment. These feelings capture the structure and organization of space, such as distances, directions, and forms of spatial relationships among actualities. Strain feelings are a way of perceiving the geometry of the world, how things are situated relative to one another, and how forces and tensions are distributed across space. These feelings allow an entity to grasp the "shape" of the environment and the relations that determine physical structure and movement.
